Chris Rumboldt believes he witnessed something special unfold in Saskatchewan over the weekend.

Rumboldt, a Corner Brook youth bowling coach, guided Abigail Tiller and Brooklyn Stride to an undefeated record and gold medals in the Bantam Girls Doubles event at the 2018 national Youth Bowling Canada tournament at the Bolorama Lanes in Regina, Sask.

“This has to be the best performance I’ve seen,” coach Rumboldt said of the 11-straight wins piled up along the way. “It was amazing. You’d have to be there to see it. They just bowled their game because they were having so much fun with it.”

Having fun was all that matter to his two young bowlers, according to Rumboldt. He said it was never about the scoreboard for his girls because they are young and were only interested in having a laugh and meeting some new friends.

“They knew the pressure was there but they just relied on each other and it was pretty amazing,” he said.

The two girls also came home with a silver medal from the bantam mixed team event after joining forces with Luke Walsh and Keegan Ennis of Paradise Bowl.

Stride, winner of a silver medal in the bantam girls singles event at the 2017 YBC Nationals in Gatineau, Que., was excited about adding two medals to her silverware collection from YBC events.

“It was really exciting and I was happy because I won it with my friend this time,” Stride said. “It means a lot to me. It was really exciting to win.”

Tiller was all smiles knowing they had done something special, racking up 11 wins in a row behind a boisterous supportive crowd of family and friends who had made the trek west to watch the magic unfold on the lanes.

“I felt like I was at the Olympics,” Tiller said of the happy feeling she felt when she received her gold medal. “I feel pretty awesome because I won and just because I had the chance to go away and have a lot of fun.”
