Cataracts to play for Allan Cup championship

The Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts will play for the Allan Cup Canadian senior hockey championship Saturday in New Brunswick following a 5-2 win over the host Bouctouche, N.B. JCs in semifinal play Friday night.

The Cataracts will meet the defending champion Lacombe, Alta. Generals (formerly Bentley Generals) 5 p.m. (NL time) Saturday.

Newfoundland has won two Allan championships, in 1986 by the Corner Brook Royals and 2011 by the Clarenville Caribous.

It’s the fourth time in seven years the Cataracts have played in the Allan Cup, and the first time Grand Falls-Windsor has reached the final. The Cats were bounced from the semifinals in each of the past two seasons, last year in Steinbach, Man. and two years ago in Clarenville following a 2-1 overtime loss to Bentley.

Player of the game Matt Bragg (one as shorthanded effort) and Brandon Bussey each scored twice for the winners, and defenceman Brandon Roach scored into an empty net.

Bryan Gillis posted his third straight win in the tournament as the Cataracts have so far been unbeaten in three games.

Lacombe beat Manitoba’s South East Prairie Thunder 8-4 in their semifinal game in a matchup of last year’s final.
