Senior hockey return to west coast gaining steam as key players roll up sleeves
Seeing senior hockey revived on the west coast is something Andy Brake sees as a strong possibility.
Newfoundland and Labrador minor hockey players are gearing up for the annual weeklong celebration of the sport at the grassroots level.
Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador has selected the Botwood Area Minor Hockey Association as this year’s host, and a ceremony will be held 12:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Harry Ivany Arena.
The organization is also hosting bantam and female under-12 invitational tournaments this weekend.
This year’s provincial slogan is “The Best Part of the Game is the Opportunity to Play.”
Goose Bay’s Arnold Kelly, Hockey NL’s minor hockey chairman for the past six years, said it’s a theme all members should focus on.
“This year’s slogan was developed to recognize that not all players are elite ones and therefore we need to provide the foundation for all players to enjoy the game and to instil a desire to play after their minor hockey days are finished,” he said in a news release.
Over 12,000 players, coaches, managers and officials are registered with Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador’s 45 minor hockey associations.
