Memorial Service

June 25 — June 25, 2012 marks the 70th anniversary of the Hann’s Point explosion in Lewisporte, during the Second World War that killed five soldiers. As far as the Lewisporte Area Heritage Society Inc. can determine there may never have been a separate memorial service to mark this occasion. Three of the soldiers are buried in Lewisporte and we thought it would be fitting to commemorate this event this year.

A memorial service is planned at 11:30 a.m. at the cemetery located next to the museum in Lewisporte. A contingent will be in attendance from Department of National Defence/9 Wing Gander as well as local clergy, Legion and Air Cadet members. The general public is also invited to attend. Inquiries can be directed to Frank Hoddinott at 535-0487, director/coordinator.

This program is for school age children who could benefit from the assistance of trained tutors in a one-on-one setting, along with some group activities. Space is limited so parents/guardians are reminded this is a first come, first serve registration. For more information contact Mabel Trenholm at 535-0615; Judith Russell at 535-0020 or email summer_reading@hotmail.ca.
