Boycott Mary Brown's

Dear Editor: I am not Roman Catholic, but the first time I heard and saw Mary Brown's' commercials tagged 'Hail Mary,' I knew it would be offensive to many people. I don't feel overly kind to Sue Hickey's editorial, as she failed to deal with any other issues attached to this incident except the obvious misuse of an important religious phrase.

Letters to the Editor - Dear Editor:

I am not Roman Catholic, but the first time I heard and saw Mary Brown's' commercials tagged 'Hail Mary,' I knew it would be offensive to many people.

I don't feel overly kind to Sue Hickey's editorial, as she failed to deal with any other issues attached to this incident except the obvious misuse of an important religious phrase.

One of the big issues is businesses' seeming willingness to create offence to gain public awareness of their product so they can reap the added benefits from the public's reaction. This tactic is not new.

We all have a right to be offended, and, I suppose, to offend, since offence is really in the eyes of the beholder. But using those sacred phrases speaks of disrespect for religious beliefs.

I would like to see Roman Catholics, rather than use the occasion to speak about their beliefs and telling us that Madonna is Roman Catholic, organize an effective boycott. We could all do with less Mary Brown's chicken. Boycott until Mary Brown's is brought to its knees and gives a public apology.
