Memorial Day honoured in Carbonear, Harbour Grace

Hundreds of people came out Friday in Carbonear and Harbour Grace to honour the 100th anniversary of one of the most deadly events in Newfoundland and Labrador’s history.

Memorial Day honours the events of July 1, 1916, a day that claimed the lives of over 300 Newfoundlanders fighting overseas at the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel in the First World War.

Parades proceeded to cenotaphs in both communities, where wreaths were laid on behalf of government, community groups, and people honouring the memory of deceased relatives.

Compass editor Andrew Robinson was at both events and snapped these photos.
