Local Search and Rescue aiming to raise $250,000 for command unit

The Kinsmen Club of Botwood recently presented a donation to members of the Mobil Command unit fund raiser committee: Left to right are: Kinsmen Gus Collins, David Alcock (Lions Member), Cameron Snow (SAR), Trevor Miller (SAR), Kinsmen President Jordon Blake, Kinsmen Kevin Jeans.

The Central Search and Rescue team has a big goal, to raise $250,000 for a new command unit.

To get there they’ve partnered with the Bishop Falls Lions Club to raise the first $150,000.

Other local groups and organizations are helping and at a recent gathering the Kinsmen Club of Botwood presented a cheque for $5,000 toward the cause.

Trevor Miller accepted the donation for the SAR team, and used the opportunity to talk about their volunteer work.

He says they are trained for everything from ice rescues, and high angle helicopter rescues to ground searches, inland water searches and assistance for paramedics in remote places.

The team has a membership, at any given time, from 20 to 48. In addition to their assistance in searches, and work with the RCMP and other organizations with traffic control and such, members also spend time talking to youth groups and teaching children what to do if they ever become lost in the woods.
