FURTHER UPDATE: Fogo Island/ Change Islands ferry still being repaired


According to the latest update from the Department of Transportation and Works, repairs to the MV Veteran will extend beyond Friday.

FURTHER UPDATE (Friday, Jan 21 — Following is the latest update from the Department of Transportation and Works posted at 11:02 a.m.) Wind and visibility in area of Fi/CI continues to prevent commencement of helo services. Helo services remain suspended. With forecasted weather, there is a possibility that helo ops might be suspended indefinitely. Will advise soonest if this decision is made. Meanwhile, a further update will be provided at 11:30. Fixed will service will resume form Gander at 12:00 as per previous Service Update.

FURTHER UPDATE (Friday, Jan. 22): (Following is the latest update from the Department of Transportation and Works posted at 8:09 a.m.):

Helo service for start of today, 22 January are on weather hold until further notice. Further update at 0840. Completion of the work to repair the MV Veteran following a small fire on board the vessel Tuesday evening will extend beyond Friday as originally anticipated. Arrangements are being made for the MV Capt. Earl W. Winsor to enter service with crossings anticipated to begin on Saturday, 22 January. Once actual time of entering service by the Winsor is determined, a further Service Update will be issued immediately. The fixed wing (airplane) and helicopter air services remain in place, weather permitting. To make best use of helicopter, the following procedure will now be employed. Helicopter will base out of Farewell. If runs are required to whichever destination, personnel are to call the Wharf Attendant at Farewell at number of 709-884-7971 or 541-7005, and he will coordinate flight requests with the pilot. Regret inconveniences of recent days.

 

UPDATE - Thursday morning, Jan. 21: Fixed Wing operations are on schedule. Helicopter operations have resumed as well. To make best use of helicopter, rather than attempt to adhere to a round route schedule, the following procedure will now be employed. Helicopter will base out of Farewell. If runs are required to whichever destination, personnel are to call the Wharf Attendant at Farewell at 709-241-4481, and he will coordinate flight requests with the helicopter pilot.

The Department of Transportation and Works advises that contingency air services are in place while repairs are carried out to the MV Veteran following a small fire on board the vessel yesterday evening.

The MV Veteran services Fogo Island and Change Islands. It is expected that the vessel will return to service on Friday, January 22.

Both a fixed wing (airplane) and helicopter air service will be implemented beginning this afternoon weather permitting.

 

Helicopter Air Service

Beginning immediately helicopter service will commence on a load and go, first come, first served basis from Farewell with the following rotation:

·       Farewell to Fogo Island to Farewell

·       Farewell to Change Islands to Farewell

·       Farewell to Change Islands to Fogo Island

·       Fogo Island to Change Islands

·       Change Islands to Farewell

 

This service will run continuously between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. daily.

 

The helicopter will land on the north side of Fogo Island.

 

Reservations are not required.

 

Fixed Wing (Airplane) Service

Fixed wing service between Fogo Island and Gander will commence mid-afternoon today (Wednesday, January 20). Flights from Fogo Island will depart from the Fogo Island airstrip, and flights from Gander will originate from the Gander International Airport.

 

Air Labrador has been contracted to provide the service.

Travellers are advised of the following departure times:

8:15 a.m.

9 a.m.

9:45 a.m.

6:45 p.m.

The Air Labrador aircraft is capable of carrying 19 passengers per trip. Travellers should contact Air Labrador to make a reservation by calling 1-800-563-3042.

 

Passengers will be charged the standard walk-on passenger fare for both fixed wing and helicopter services.
