St. John's, N.L. — Joe Boland is the new chief of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.

The announcement was made today (Tuesday) at RNC headquarters in St. John's by Justice Minister Andrew Parsons.

Boland began his career with the RNC in 1983 after graduating from the Atlantic Police Academy.

Since then he has served in many RNC branches including patrol services, criminal investigation, operational support services and the recruiting and training unit.

Before becoming chief, he was the officer in charge of the patrol and operational services division.

Boland was appointed by the Independent Appointments Commission and assumed his new duty on July 1.

“Within the RNC, there is no higher rank one can achieve than chief. It’s a role that requires extensive experience as an officer, involvement in the community and great leadership. I am confident that Joe Boland has all those qualities and more," Parsons said.

“It is crucial, now, more than ever, that officers within the RNC have faith in their chief. It is also vital that the public have faith in the leadership of the RNC. Undoubtedly, Chief Boland has many challenges ahead, but it gives me great comfort to know he has the trust and respect of all his fellow officers."
