The province’s minister of fisheries and land resources will join a chorus of voices disappointed in U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber exports.

Steve Crocker was invited to join a Federal-Provincial task group which will be chaired by  Jim Carr, the federal Minister of National Resources.

In a conference call set for Thursday, the task force will discuss the impact of the tariffs and make recommendations to Ottawa on how to mitigate the effects through other opportunities related to forestry industry.

“These are important discussions for our province and we will take every step to ensure that Newfoundland and Labrador’s interests are fully appreciated by the Federal Government and the United States,” Crocker stated in a release.

Federal Minister of Global Affairs Chrystia Freeland is the lead on engagement and negotiations with the United States.
