The foundation in fundamentals was laid over a few years and it paid off in spades this weekend for the Sprucewood Academy Grade 5 squad when they captured a West Coast basketball championship.

“I’ve been working with this group basically since they were in Kindergarten, and we’re finally seeing the results,” said coach Brian Cooke after his team won the title in Pasadena.

“They’ve got the fundamentals and the team play,” said Cooke of the team that won six games against no losses to claim the title.

“The kids are hungry now for the games and competition and they’re feeling the winning,” added Cooke.

The coach credits their involvement in the local Steve Nash program for their fundamental development and understanding of team play – the main factor in their on-court success, he notes.

Cooke also coaches a Grade 7 team that will represent Grand Falls-Windsor at the West Coast championship later this month, also being played in Pasadena.
