A chance to prosper

Dear Editor:
After listening to recent commentary I felt compelled, as a resident and businessman, to address some of the criticisms of the current government's investment or lack thereof in rural Newfoundland and Labrador.
I am proof of this government's rural investment and intention to help sustain rural Newfoundland. With a lot of hard work and partnership with government departments I was able to acquire the necessary capital to expand my business and therefore employ a greater number of people from the area. The current government's support of and investment in my business and in turn the forest industry on the Northern Peninsula has diversified and revitalized the entire industry. It's because of this support that our industry has been given a chance to survive and even more importantly, a chance to prosper.
I would ask the people of this district to stop and reflect on what today would look like without this government's support over the past six years.

If I received the bucks you received from this govt I too would be singing their praises especially during the by election. Once the election is over can we expect to see more letters to the editor? I wish you well but please don't fall into the trap of having to bloat political egos...

Quote :Tatchell, forestry workers and local leaders all gave Holson Forest Products owner Ted Lewis a standing ovation when he rose to announce the pellet plant, new sawmill and wood inventory yard he'll be building with the $10 million he's receiving from the province.
Funding breakdown
Of the funding announced at a news conference at his Roddickton sawmill, the Department of Natural Resources will provide a $7-million non-interest bearing loan to be paid back within 15 years and a $2-million grant. The Department of Environment, meanwhile, is contributing $1 million under its Green Fund toward the wood pellet plant.

Dale Chaffey from Fort McMurray/Buchans, Alberta writes: Although I am not bitter, as many others may be, I do see the proverbial writing on the wall . I am happy for Mr. Lewis and the people in that area. I can only hope the 10 million will help those people for years to come. Hey who knows maybe the pellet industry is the wave of the future in rural Newfoundland. Seriously though as a man who has worked in the forest industry for roughly ten years now I know how this will pan out, without a doubt! The industry is really suffering and a sawmill or pellet plant in rural Newfoundland has roughly the same chance of surviving as a piece of cherry cheesecake on Oprah's dining room table. Sorry Ted my friend but that's how it is. Come on now Ted, you already knew that didn't you?
You may want to take some of that 10 million and invest it into training for some of your employees. I don't know welding, heavey equipment operation, mechanics. I suspect they will be heading out West with the rest of us in about 10 years and 1 day!
