BOTWOOD, NL — Botwood is a town where residents rally around a cause, whether it’s to support the Janeway Children’s Hospital or to raise money for cancer, heart and stroke, liver or kidney research.

Trina Ralph of the Kidney Foundation, her mother-in-law Amy Ralph, and family, friends and volunteers held a fundraiser at the Botwood Kin Centre on Sept. 23 to support the Kidney Foundation.

The fundraiser was a pea soup supper with dessert, along with a mini indoor yard sale and draws for baskets of hair products and Purity goodies.

Several volunteers at the fundraiser are themselves kidney transplant recipients from Botwood, including Carla (Vineham) Thompson, Ina (Guy) Nichols, Maurice Hart, Roger Hart and Roy Mills. Along with the recipients, Carla and Ina’s donors were also there volunteering. Carla’s mother Jean Vineham was her donor, and Ina’s sister Daphne Parsons was her donor.

Carla underwent six years of dialysis. It’s been nearly 12 years since her transplant.

Ina had a transplant 25 years ago.

Several residents of Botwood who came out to support the pea soup take out for the Kidney Foundation were all kidney transplant recipients. Pictured are (front) Ina Nichol and Carla Thompson; (back) Maurice Hart, Roy Mills and Roger Hart.

Maurice was on dialysis for two years and had a transplant 27 years ago.

Roger had over four years of dialysis and 20 years with his first transplant and 13 months with his second.

Roy went on dialysis for eight years, and its been three years and seven months since his transplant.

The people involved with the Kidney Foundation wish to thank everyone for the donations received over the years, and all the people tested to be donors, not only to family, but to strangers who are in need like these residents of Botwood.

The soup supper raised a total of $1,240, which included a $200-donation from the Botwood Kinsmen Club.

Take out organizer Amy Ralph thanks everyone who donated and came out to make this event a great success.
