Delayed opening for Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium

GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR, NL – Rumors of Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium closing were put to rest at the latest council meeting by Councillor Mike Browne and Mayor Barry Manuel.

“There is no movement afoot to close the Joe Byrne,” said Manuel.

After the parks and recreation department met with the two most frequent user groups – figure skating and minor hockey – it was determined both groups could be accommodated at Windsor Stadium. The opening date for Joe Byrne Stadium will be later than usual this year, and is slated for Nov. 13.

“There’s no need to open two stadiums this early in the season,” said Browne. “Figure skating and minor hockey were content with the number of hours they received. Currently there is no ice time that cannot be accommodated by the Town of Grand Falls-Windsor.”
