PETERVIEW, N.L. — As April showers bring May flowers, it also brings another milestone to Peterview.
For 53 years men, and now women as well, are providing fire protection to the town of Peterview.
Each May the departments attend a church service at the Salvation Army Church the Sunday before the ball to have a candle lighting ceremony to honor deceased firefighters and to light a candle of blessing for the present and future firefighters with a luncheon after for the department and community. Representatives of neighbouring departments were also in attendance.
MHA Jerry Dean spoke not only as a MHA but as Botwood’s former mayor in that he knows how important the department is for Peterview. Botwood has called on Peterview for several major fires and other situations. He noted the value of the training hours the firefighters commit to.
Newfoundland and Labrador Association Fire Serves president Duane Antle spoke about the provincial and federal governments being in the process of enacting laws to aid the fire men and women with pull over laws, cancer medical treatment laws, and income tax with Canada Revenue’s new regulations and deductions.
Antle remarked seeing a sign near Gander earlier in the day as May 5 was International Firefighter Day. The sign had said, ‘What would you do if no one came to your call’ noting that most fire departments are filled with volunteers who leave their homes any day and hour giving of themselves, risking injury and even the ultimate sacrifice of their life to answer fire and emergency call.
He commended the firefighters and also their wives, girlfriends and family who not only encourage the firefighters but support them in any way shape or form.
Fire Chief Glen Sheppard delivered a report, noting the department only had eight calls over the year with brush fires, chimney fires and aided in oxygen inspections, chimney inspections, a medical incident and fire prevention events.
Sheppard was very pleased with the number of calls being down from previous years, meaning residents are learning and practicing what the department is trying to help deliver to the community of Peterview.
