According to North Atlantic Refining, no progress was made in union meetings this evening.

In a press release issued tonight, North Atlantic says they met with the local executive committee of United Steelworkers at the request of a union representative.

However, the company now says talks ended abruptly when the union refused to consider any proposal that included a workforce reduction.

North Atlantic laid off 128 workers last month from the Come By Chance oil refinery.

The release says North Atlantic reiterated “the critical need to reduce the size of the current workforce if the refinery is going to continue to be viable.”

This comes after a meeting yesterday, which North Atlantic says they were “disappointed” with the outcome.

“NARL management remains open to meaningful discussions with the USW but is growing concerned that time is running out to reach a viable path forward to lessen the overall impact on all affected employees,” said the release.
