Before Kerry Lynn Greene took the Bishop’s Falls team to the Central Summer Games in Springdale she said their goal was for the kids to have fun.

They did more than have fun when they returned home with eight gold medals and the overall Central Summer Games title.

“It was a great experience for the children – meeting friends and the sport itself they really came together as a team during the games,” said Kerry Lynn Greene, director of the Bishop’s Falls summer program.

The Bishop’s Falls under-13 boys team won the gold medal in all five sports; the under-16 boys team won a gold medal in ball hockey and the Bishop’s Falls girls team captured two gold medals in volleyball and softball.

Greene said while all the kids were thrilled with their success, the girls were particularly proud of their accomplishment.

“The girls were very excited,” she said. “Their main sport is volleyball, and they’re all well rounded athletes, but they were exceptionally excited about gold in softball.”

Greene contends that the best match of the games was the championship final in soccer for the under-13 boys.

After defeating Springdale in the round-robin portion of the games, the Bishop’s Falls squad faced them again in the championship final and defeated them in a shootout.

Regulation proved that both clubs could play a solid defensive game with a 0-0 draw. After two five minute ends without any scoring, the teams sent up six players for the shootout with Bishop’s Falls winning 1-0.

“Springdale has always been a soccer town,” said Greene. “It was very intense and exciting and it was definitely the highlight of the games.”
