Dear Editor:

All these years I have kept an essay that was published in your Feb. 10, 1977 issue. The essay, titled "Our Liberties", eloquently discussed the balance of freedoms, rights and responsibilities that make democracy work. I am asking for your permission to share that essay with my email friends in Canada and the USA because its truths are needed to be known even more today than they were in 1977. Could you also advise the source and author of the essay. Would it be available in digital format? My copy is tattered and yellowed with some words missing.

In 1977 I was a resident of Grand Falls and very concerned about the direction our country was taking. That essay clarified the issues for me and has helped me to be a better citizen ever since. I currently reside in Thunder Bay, Ontario where I retired from Abitibi-Price Inc. in 1997.

I suggest that the article is well worth reprinting. It may help many of your readers who have had to deal with numerous difficulties recently and may be questioning the foundations our democracy.
