Public meeting on school changes next week

Change is on the horizon for the primary/elementary portion of Grand Falls-Windsor’s school system.

English School Board members will hear input from the school community next Tuesday about a proposal for reconfiguration of the Grand Falls-Windsor system, including the closure of Millcrest Academy.

A proposal for reorganization was outlined Tuesday in a letter to parents and guardians from Milton Peach, chairman of the Newfoundland and Labrador English School Board.

The proposal includes Woodland Primary and the former Nova Central School District regional office located on Price’s Avenue becoming K-3 schools, which will feed into a newly configured Grade 4-6 Sprucewood Academy. Millcrest Academy would close.

Some catchment changes will be required to accommodate these changes and all schools will offer Early French Immersion, the letter noted. This change builds upon a 2009 motion of the Nova Central School Board and includes renovations to the three school facilities.

Discussions with school councils on the Grand Falls-Windsor school system began March 2014.

“As part of the Board’s multi-year planning process we recognized there were some challenges facing the Grand Falls- Windsor school system which included enrollment/capacity, grade level configurations, facilities and student transportation, as well as the upcoming implementation of full-day Kindergarten in the 2016-2017 school year,” Peach stated.

The community gets to address the proposal at a public information session on Jan. 13, 6:30 p.m. in the gymnasium of Exploits Valley High. A Notice of Motion will be tabled at the regular board meeting on Jan. 17, 9:30 a.m. at the District Conference Centre, St. John’s, the letter stated.

In February, a public consultation session will be held in the gymnasium of Exploits Valley High to provide members of the school community the opportunity to provide feedback on the proposal. A vote on the Notice of Motion will take place during the regular board meeting on Mar. 12, 7 p.m. at the Central Regional Office in Gander.

Further information on this process, including an online feedback survey and schedule of the process, can be found on the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District website: www.nlesd.ca/about/myp-grandfalls-windsor.jsp.
