Making memories forever
To say that Alaina Joe, a 16-year-old Level 11 student at St. Anne’s in Conne River, is going to have a much busier school year than usual would be a huge understatement.
Alaina Joe was filled with emotion as she accepted the Miss Teen Newfoundland and Labrador crown on Sunday, October 5 following four days of competition in St. John’s.
Alaina won the prestigious title of Miss Teen Newfoundland and Labrador last weekend during a competition at the St. John’s Arts and Culture Centre.
She was one of 15 young women from across the province to compete for the honour of representing the province’s youth at various events over the next 12 months.
Alaina said she wanted to enter the event to encourage young aboriginal women to get involved because it’s a great experience and tremendous opportunity.
“I’m the first young aboriginal woman to have entered the event,” Alaina said.
“I didn’t expect to make it to the final eight let alone win the title. It just goes prove the point that young women, aboriginal and non-aboriginal, can achieve any goal they set their minds on.”
Alaina said all the young women and personnel involved with the event were amazing.
She said, “The weekend was fabulous. This event is something young women should definitely consider entering. My win just goes to show you should never doubt yourself as everyone is amazing in their own way.”
She said she is really looking forward to attending various functions across the province over the next year.
“I’m eager to make new memories and to meet as many people along the way,” she said. “I’m sure it’s going to be an amazing year.”
Isabelle Fry, executive director of the Miss Teen NL Pageant, said the young women are judged in a number of categories to determine the overall winner.
In addition to the overall title of Miss Teen NL, there are a number of individual awards presented.
This year’s individual awards went to Miss Teen Photogenic, Bailey Tarrant (Lawn) ; Definitions Fitness Award, Shanlee Mitchell, (Grand Falls-Windsor) ; Miss Teen Academic, Kelsey Grant (Corner Brook) ; Humanitarian Award, Alaina Joe (Conne River); Miss Teen Talent, Bailey Tarrant (Lawn); Subway People’s Choice Award, Alaina Joe (Conne River) and Miss Teen Friendship, Melanie King (St. John’s).
