The 2012 NL Summer Games got off to a blazing start in Carbonear this evening (Aug. 18) as several thousand athletes, coaches, volunteers, dignitaries, sporting enthusiasts and entertainers took part in what can only be described as an electrifying and first-rate opening ceremonies.

With organizers holding their collective breath that the rain would hold off, the ceremonies seemingly went off without a hitch.

The ceremonies climaxed with the lighting of the flame by Stanley Cup champion Danny Cleary and Olympic gold medallist Jamie Korab — both of Harbour Grace — and Premier Kathy Dunderdale officially calling on the competitions to begin.

Hundreds of athletes from throughout the province — and a small contingent from St. Pierre — proudly paraded onto the field at the spruced up Carbonear recreation complex.

Competition will get underway on Sunday, Aug. 19 with ball hockey, beach volleyball, swimming, softball, baseball and tennis in the spotlight for the first half of the Games.
