Thick smoke rises from a forest fire that broke out west of Grand Falls-Windsor near Rushy Pond on Tueday. There were two fire crews and one water tanker working to extinguish the blaze.

There is a forest fire burning west of Grand Falls-Windsor near Rushy Pond.

According to Steve Balsom, the on duty officer with Fire and Emergency Services, they received the first report of the fire late Tuesday afternoon.

Balsom said there were two crews of eight people and one air tanker working to extinguish the 1.6 hectare blaze.

While smoke could be seen and smelled in Grand Falls-Windsor on Tuesday evening, Grand Falls-Windsor Fire Department Chief Vince Mackenzie Tweeted there was no immediate threat to the town at this time, but the fire department was monitoring the situation.

Balsom said the closest asset in the region near the fire is Beothuk Park.
