A post-New Year's pullover led to a rough start for 2012 for one man..

The 25-year-old man from St. John's was traveling on the Trans-Canada Highway at approximately 1:30 a.m. Jan. 2 when members of the Grand Falls-Windsor and Lewisporte RCMP detachments conducted a traffic stop near the Norris Arm North exit.

"It was part of a routine traffic checkpoint that turned into a Controlled Drug and Substance Act investigation," said Sergeant Boyd Merrill, provincial RCMP media relations officer.

As a result, RCMP seized six kilograms of packaged marijuana and a quantity of cash.

The driver is facing charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Sgt. Merrill said at this time, it is not known whether the suspect is known to police in relation to other offences.

However, the male driver will have to appear in provincial court in answer to the charges.
