As successful as Adamo has been with his bodybuilding, he does not want it to take over his life and is as strict about his priorities as he is about his diet before competition.

“I do not want my sport to get in the way of family, for example. My family comes first and work. I prevailed and that’s amazing, but I don’t want that to dominate over my family life – I always prioritize.

“I was in the mindset that is always my attitude it’s for fun. It’s a big honour to be on that national stage in the biggest competition in the nation. That was it – whatever I get out of it is a bonus.”

Even though Adamo views bodybuilding as a hobby, he puts in an effort deserving of his success.

“Usually there is an on-season and an off-season,” he said. “For me in November I have been (training like the on-season) and since June 1 it was stricter - six days a week workouts, I added cardio and I committed myself to a more strict diet. I think the key was that I never took an off-season and went crazy eating with no workouts.”

Adamo admits that, other than table tennis, bodybuilding is the only sport he is capable of playing. He sees it as the mother of all sports.

“If you want to play basketball you should be in the gym lifting weights, same thing for hockey and golf, as mild as it is, you have to work some muscles,” he said. “Bodybuilding is different. It combines your diet, water intake, geometry and physics – you have to say ‘okay this angle will do this, a 45 degree angle will do this, a 90 degree angle will do this.’ It’s a very wide spectrum and detail oriented sport.”

Adamo said he has not let the accomplishment set in, but plans to take a step back from competitions, perhaps take a year off from competing, and refine and polish up the weak points in his routine and hopefully help the sport grow in the area.

“I would love to take this accomplishment and divert it to the community, to promote the sport here for a town in central Newfoundland I would love for it to be a hub for bodybuilding, so I’m sending out a message – if they are interested, I’m here to help.”
