“In a 16-person unit, and there were three or four people in a room, and they were all very happy,” said Minister Kennedy. “They were from Buchans, and they wanted to remain in Buchans, and they were pleased the service was there.”

The Buchans facility has received $1.4 million for capital equipment, repairs and renovations at the A.M. Guy Memorial Health Centre since 2003. This includes almost $565,000 for medical equipment, a new ambulance and bed replacements; and, approximately $849,000 for renovations such as a new sprinkler system and upgrades to the electrical, fire alarm, and food delivery systems.

Ms. McGrath said the money that’s been spent and will be spent at the Buchans facility, will go a long way as we strive to enhance primary health care services there.

The minister thanked Clayton Forsey, MHA for Exploits, for advocating for Botwood.

“He might get on my nerves on occasion, but that’s what MHAs have to do,” joked Minister Kennedy.

Ms. Forsey said Botwood and the region has benefited from government funding for the facility, and the community and public participation that has worked  to make the Hugh Twomey Centre a success.

Botwood Mayor Jerry Dean was unable to attend, but Deputy Mayor Scott Sceviour said the Hugh Twomey Centre is the biggest employer in the community.

“That speaks volumes for the investment that you’ve given us here today,” he said. “The communities (in the region) also greatly appreciate the investment.”
