A sure sign that Christmas is just around the corner is appearing this week across the province.

The publication that has become as much of a tradition as mummering and boiled cake in Newfound-land and Labrador is now available.

Yuletide Preparations has something for everyone and is sure to provide entertainment and become a resource of information throughout the Christmas season.

Ron Ennis, managing editor of Transcontinental Community Newspapers in Newfoundland and Lab-rador, said the annual project is one of the most exciting to produce for the group.

"One of our favorite projects of the year is Yuletide Preparations," he said. "The work begins early in the new year as the search commences for the exact essentials that will serve as somewhat of a distraction for people during one of the busiest times."

In the pages of the brightly-coloured book the reader will find scores of delicious recipes, submitted by cooks and bakers from Daniels' Harbour to Burin.

For those who are handy, there are Christmas craft instructions which will produce gifts for friends or more decorations for your home.

The book is definitely put together with a Newfoundland and Labrador theme, though.

"For years the emphasis has been on the celebration and intertwining of some of the basis values and traditions of the people of this province," Mr. Ennis said. "We are indeed a people apart and there is to be celebrated what has happened and continues to happen in homes around the island and in Labrador leading up to and during the holiday."

He said the publication has become a collector's item over the years and provides insights into almost every facet of our Christmas tradition.

"Within its covers are to be found the accounts of the birth of Jesus Christ by apostles Matthew and Luke, commentaries about the meaning of the season, stories about people and events associated with the holiday, pages of recipes and crafts, a song book, puzzles, and advertising messages from businesses province-wide," Mr. Ennis said.
