However, he made his COC company main stage debut as the coachman in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk.
Michael studied music at the University of Toronto and graduated from the faculty's opera division. He played Figaro in the popular comedic opera, Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, Gustav Holst's Savitri, and The Pirates of Penzance. In 2004, Mr. Barrett performed in the world premiere of Maria Chapdelaine with Opera Barrie, singing the part of FranÇois Paradis.
In the fall of 2007, Michael appeared as Nemorino in the University of Toronto's production of L'Elisir d'amore, also a comic opera.
His brother Peter also has musical accolades. At age 17, he received provincial honours for voice, and was chosen to represent Newfoundland and Labrador in the National Music Festival in Saskatchewan.
He received the Ian Rosenblatt Bursary at the Wexford Festival in Ireland and was recently singled out as a winner in the New Discovery Winner's Showcase in Ottawa.
Peter's debut performance on the main stage was as the Mandarin in Puccini's Turandot (an opera noted for its most famous performance, Nessun Dorma, performed by tenor Luciano Pavarotti at the World Cup), followed as Marullo in Rigoletto, and Benjamin Britten's Peter Grimes.
Peter also sang the role of Nick in the North American premiere of The Handmaid's Tale, a musical adaptation of Margaret Atwood's famous dystopian novel.
Peter is one of Canada's newest faces on the opera and concert stage.
Winner of the Galaxy Rising Star prize for most promising young artist at the CBC's National Competition for Young Performers, Peter is a graduate of the Glenn Gould Professional School at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto where he studied under Roxolana Roslak and Peter Tiefenbach.
Mr. Tiefenbach is the veteran of the trio, enjoying a long career as a performer, composer and teacher. The Toronto Star called him a "magical accompanist" and he has collaborated with many Canadian leading singers and instrumentalists.
