For the first time in almost a decade, a student from Lakeside Academy in Buchans has attended the national Encounters With Canada program.

Millertown youth Chantal Hurley was among 11 other Newfoundlanders and 135 students from across the country participating in the week-long program in Ottawa earlier this month.

Encounters With Canada is a program that brings young Canadians between the ages of 14 and 17, from different backgrounds and regions, together in order to give them the opportunity to learn about one another and the regions they come from. The program offers twelve different one-week sub-themes, which range from arts and culture, business, international affairs, law and many more... to give the participants a closer look at the career path they may be considering.

Chantal is a Level III student and considering a career in the medical field. During her week in Ottawa, she delved into health issues through the enrichment program. She attended sessions and visited Canadian Blood Services Centre where they were tested to find out their blood type. Participants had the chance to interact with the Ottawa medical community and in order to provide an informative and interesting week dedicated to Medicine & Health, there will were also three main types of activities: visits, presentations, and discussions.

A variety of subjects were covered, such as the realities of entering medical school, the trials of the medical profession, ethics in medicine, proper health and fitness, health research, etc.

Participants also engage in a medical ethics case study workshop where they assess, discuss, debate, and make decisions on actual medical cases.

"The first part of the week was more about learning all about Canada's multiculturalism and bilingualism," said Chantal. "We went to the a war memorial cemetery and placed candles on veterans' headstones. I liked that very much because I played hockey for a few years and never saw a real NHL game before."

She also said the week taught them about the nation's capital and they toured the House of Commons, the Senate and had a tour of Ottawa and Hull. They visited the Museum of Civilization and took in an Ottawa Senators hockey game as they played the Toronto Maple Leafs. Ottawa won she said.

Chantal said the trip was a great experience and she made lots of new friends.

"This year was the first time I heard about the program," she said, explaining that her new guidance counselor told her about it and she decided to apply.

"I recommend it to everyone," she said.

Sounds like a great experience for medical students. Cultural sensitivity is important. Med students might also benefit from the events and interships available through Bioethics International- they run programs in New York City, USA and Italy, Europe with a focus on medical/bioethics as well. www.bioethicsinternational.org
