It's taken awhile - two trips to Afghanistan and the departure of band member D'Arcy Broderick - but The Fables have got their new album - Kings and Little Ones - ready to roll.
And they're taking it on a tour of the Arts and Culture Centres across the province Sept. 22 through 29.
The album features eight original songs from the band's guitar player/singer Glenn Simmons and one original from multi-instrumentalist Billy Sutton.
This is Sutton's first go at having an original tune on a Fables' album. The Pipe Track is really three roller-coaster instrumentals that run at breakneck speed one into the other. "Individually they're called Long Harry, Broken Trucks and Esjabe," says Sutton.
Long Harry and Broken Trucks are named after places in Harbour Grace, while Esjabe is the name of his father's boat.
Meanwhile, Simmons says the band sounds a little more edgy since fiddler player/baritone Broderick decided it was time to pack it in and move on several months ago. And while they'll miss him, the band's songwriter hopes fans will find "a change is as good as a rest," when it comes to the slightly new direction the band's taking.
The title for The Fables' fourth album comes from the title track.
"It's a poker game we used to play when I was a lot younger," he grins. "The smallest card in your hand is wild, so that means the smallest card gets to be as big as the largest card in the deck for once. I thought it fell in well with a lot of what I was trying to say lyrically on the album."
Along with Simmons and Sutton, bass players Ian Chipman and Byron Pardy, drummer Mike McDonald, and fiddler Glenn Hiscock blend musical styles to make The Fables.
The Fables tour begins at the St. John's Arts and Culture Centre this Saturday, Sept. 22, and continues in Carbonear Sunday night, Sept. 23, before heading on to Arts and Culture Centres across the province during the week. Monday, Sept. 24 will see them in Gander; Tuesday, Sept. 25, Grand Falls-Windsor; Thursday, Sept. 27, Stephenville; Friday, Sept. 28, Corner Brook and Saturday Sept. 29, Labrador West.
