Photography can be one of the most personal forms of art there is as it captures a true moment of time in our everyday world.

Photography can be one of the most personal forms of art there is as it captures a true moment of time in our everyday world.

Artist Madeline (Eveleigh) Allen grew up in Badger, nestled among the picturesque banks of the Exploits River, Badger Brook, Red Indian River and the surrounding forests. As a young child she developed an appreciation for nature and the area she called her home.

She discovered her passion for photography about five years ago after her husband gave her a camera as a gift.

During a vacation she discovered she had a "nack" for taking pictures. According to Ms. Allen, her childhood memories are the basis for the development of her skills and passion for photography.

Her favourite photographs to capture are of sunsets, landscapes and especially the fall foliage.

Ms. Allen said her greatest inspiration is "the autumn of stunning colours - the reds, oranges and golden tones of the maple and the birch trees with different shades of green of the pine and spruce trees that clad the hills, forest and valleys" of her childhood days in Badger.

Now residing in Winnipeg, she has spent a lot of time working at her photography, along with trying out different forms of art.

Another talent she discovered was for Smudge Art, which is digital hand drawing done using a computer. She said her love for beautiful colours has been the basis that allowed her to create fantasy, whimsical birds and figures.

"I find my Smudge Art to be relaxing and meditative and it allows me to produce beautiful art with vibrant colours and textures," said Ms. Allen.

Having lived away for many years, she and her husband Barry recently returned to Badger for a visit. Ms. Allen said she is "proud to be a Newfie." That pride is going to be turned in to a coffee table book containing photographs she has taken while in the province.

Having spent some time during previous visits in the eastern areas of the province, she plans on focusing her attention this time to the central and western areas.

In particular, she is looking forward to photographing Little Bay Islands, where she spent many summer vacations as a young child visiting family.

Some other places she plans on visiting include Twillingate and Fogo Island where she hoped to see icebergs and whales. She is also hoping to capture photographs of the ocean, sunsets and coastal communities.

When asked what she considers to be her definition of success, she said, "Success in my eyes is measured by the smile on your face and the joy you show when reviewing my artwork."

She added her art is created to move others and leave them with a sense of serenity and joy.

She believes many people live their lives with a desire to leave an impression, however her wish is to make an impression now while she is here. You can feel the passion in her voice while she talks about her art work, and come away feeling inspired that all dreams are possible if you want it bad enough.

Ms. Allen feels strongly that we all walk this earth with the help of spirit guides and guardian angels. She believes as she has continued to grow in life, she has become more attuned to her spiritual side and that she has been blessed with a wonderful talent.

In her short career as a freelance photographer and artist, she has made many accomplishments. Many of her pieces have been published by The International Library of Photographers. She works with The Visual Arts Guild of Frisco, Texas.

In June, she published her first hardcover coffee table book entitled My Journey: The Soul of an Artist, which contains some of her Smudge Art work.

Her next book has already been completed and will be entitled Sweet Scents - In the Garden. It is set to be released in the fall.

She has also had success with solo exhibitions of her work. Some upcoming projects include a two-day Home and Garden show in Winnipeg on Aug. 9-10. She will be part of a WindsorVos.com show for small businesses in September in Winnipeg and has been invited to a six-month show at Definitely Superior Art Gallery in Thunder Bay, Ont. for June 2009.
