SYDNEY ServiCom Canada Ltd. is expanding Sydney River call centre, creating up to 175 new full-time positions.

Premier Rodney MacDonald made the announcement Monday morning, with Gene Caldwell, chief financial officer of ServiCom Canada Ltd., Todd Riley, site director of ServiComs local location, and Stephen Lund, president and CEO of Nova Scotia Business Inc.

The province, through NSBI, authorized a payroll rebate for ServiCom to a maximum of $914,400 over the next five years.

An expanded Sydney site and the addition of new employees will allow ServiCom to accommodate new contracts and focus on incoming calls.

The call centre opened in 2000 and was taken over by Servicom, a division of JNET Communications, a New York-based company, in 2004.

More jobs are always a good thing, but these are call centre jobs!!! Have you ever worked at a call centre?? the worst job you'll ever have. You are treated like an inmate. They run them like a prison.

I always like a good laugh in the morning before work, I can always count on the Nova Scotia goverment. Double time day tommorrow...90 hr for 12 hrs = $1080.00 for a Days work! Cant make that in a Month with Serviconthegov. 170 Jobs = 170 Sick EI Claims.

I cant belive the comments over this...some people are never satisified I guess....15 years ago you would hear people complaining that there are no jobs to be found here..people would line up just to plant trees..or deliver flyers...now things have changed...the islands employment has greatly improved...lots of jobs have come..stores here are starving to find extra help and the babies still have to whine that they dont pay enough...this place has improved..unfortunatly with the addition of the internet we have to listen to those negative comments form wherever they have moved to
